A Very Special Notice:

Dear families,
Nearly 5 million Syrians, half of which are children, have been displaced from their country by the violence of the Syrian Civil War. Tzu Chi has been assisting the refugees with humanitarian aid efforts in Turkey, the largest host country with nearly 3 million Syrian refugees, and in Jordan, the third largest host country with over 1 million Syrian refugees – both populations consisting largely of women and children. Among its contributions, Tzu Chi has been distributing food and other essentials, offering health assistance, and helping school-aged children attend school instead of working to provide for their families.
The challenges these children face after having gone through immense hardship and changes can cause lasting emotional and psychological effects, and everything that can be done to help alleviate this must be done. Our aim is to support the education of Syrian schoolchildren in Jordan and Turkey by sending them care packages with stationery and school supplies. In doing so, we hope to empower them with the knowledge that their futures and dreams are still important and possible. One of the most important components of these packages, handwritten and heartfelt letters created by each donor, will hopefully let them know how much people their age around the world respect and care about them. Lastly, giving additional stationery in each package will encourage children to share their gifts with their friends and siblings, helping them understand that despite the hardships they have been through, they still have the opportunity to show their compassion and to change the world. We are excited to invite our fellow Tzu Chi members and their families to take part in this project. We encourage you to look over and discuss the flyers attached to this letter with your family, and we hope that you decide to join us. Every kind thought and contribution counts, no matter how great or small. With the power of our love and unity, we can come together and change lives.
On 2/26, our teachers will explain to the students the background of this project, to inspire the students to be compassionate.  On 2/26, teachers will also guide students in how to make cards to express their love and care.  We ask that parents help their students to make their cards at home and collect the appropriate shoe boxes (30x20x10cm), unused toiletries and school supplies to bring to school on 3/5. We encourage students from the same class to share shoe boxes.
On 3/5, Boston Tzu Chi and Youth group will hold a bake sale to fundraise for the cost of shipping the care packages to refugees. Parents are welcome to contribute baked goods and/or purchase the delicious treats.  After the 3/5 speech contest, the school will hold a ceremony to collect and organize the care packages. We hope that all families, teachers and volunteers can stay to celebrate this memorable moment. Thank you all!!

With gratitude,
Tzu Shao and Tzu Chi Academy Boston
