美國羅斯福基金會董事長安娜．羅斯福今天到花蓮，親自頒贈「傑出公共服務獎」給慈濟基金會證嚴法師，表彰證嚴法師帶領全球慈濟人無遠弗屆的慈悲精神和行動。美國羅斯福基金會董事長安娜．艾黎娜．羅斯福（Anna Eleanor Roosevelt）下午在花蓮慈濟靜思堂，頒發「傑出公共服務獎（Distinguished Public Service Award）」給證嚴法師。她說，這次頒發傑出公共服務獎給證嚴法師，是羅斯福基金會董事會一致通過，也是羅斯福基金會首次在美國以外的國家地區頒獎。安娜．羅斯福在致詞時推崇證嚴法師帶領全球慈濟人，在災難發生時，克服政治和文化的障礙及時抵達災區，為傷患提供醫療，為失去家園者興建永久屋，帶給災民希望。安娜．羅斯福指出，2004年南亞海嘯、2010年海地強震和2011年日本震災，在災難發生後的幾小時內，慈濟人已抵達現場展開救助行動，慈濟人愛的足跡已踏遍72個國家地區，她很感佩證嚴法師悲天憫人的胸懷，和以實際行動改變人類命運的精神。羅斯福基金會執行長安德魯．利奇（Andrew Rich）則是表示，頒贈獎章給慈濟，象徵兩股「善」的力量的結合，這股力量將改變人類未來的命運。證嚴法師親自出席受獎儀式，並以謝函感謝羅斯福基金會肯定慈濟人改變世界的力量。她說，數十萬的慈濟志工就是公共服務人士，她很感謝慈濟人同心、同道、同志的付出，並期勉慈濟人繼續為人群服務，為「淨化人心、祥和社會、祈求天下無災難」奉獻心力。

• 本月人文講座將於十月十六日舉行，主題是”蔬果秘碼 - 解開蔬食的迷思”，講座將由一群有中西醫學養和素食經驗的朋友們與大家一起討論分享 (詳情請參考附件)。蔬果不但能養顏美容，還能抗老化，此外它們也具有各種不同的療效。專家們也針對幼兒期、兒童期、青春期、成年期、銀髮期等不同人生階段，搭配不同的飲食素食材料，提供不同的料理方法，以滿足各年齡層的成長及需要，讓您健康又美麗。

證嚴上人的叮嚀與靜思語:
• 重視家庭道德倫理，社會自然就能安定祥和。
• 做好事，是人生的目的，也是義務。

Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students:
On Sunday, October 9, Andrew Rich and Roosevelt Institute board chair Anna E. Roosevelt presented the 2011 Distinguished Public Service Award to Dharma Master Cheng Yen, founder of the Tzu Chi Foundation, at a ceremony in Hulien, Taiwan. The Distinguished Public Service Award is granted to leaders from all areas of civil society who demonstrate a lifetime commitment to outstanding public service, providing an occasion to reflect upon the values that inspire such leadership -- values that Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt exemplified throughout their lives.
Known for its ability to quickly overcome obstacles of distance, politics, and culture, Tzu Chi has established a remarkable record of achievement: building hospitals for the sick; homes for the homeless, and bringing hope and relief to hundreds of thousands in the wake of the 2004 and 2011 tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan; after the devastation of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans; and in the terrible hours and days following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
Much like FDR, who once said that the “test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have too much; it is whether we provide enough to those who have too little,” the Tzu Chi Foundation has dedicated itself to these simple yet profound principles. Thanks to its adherence to these ideas, and to the compassionate vision of its founder, Dharma Master Cheng Yen, millions of people all over the world have been able to embrace the hope and promise of a better life.

• The first lecture in the TCA humanity lecture series for adults has been rescheduled to 10/16. The topic is the “pass codes for a healthy vegetarian diet”. Several medical professionals (Chinese and Western) and vegetarian practitioners will discuss the merits of vegetarian diet and share their experience.
• As a commitment to our community and environment, Tzu Chi Boston Service Center, Tzu Ching+, and Tzu Shao will participate again in the Annual Fall Cleanup of Hemlock Gorge Reservation sponsored by Friends of Hemlock Gorge's in City of Newton/Needham (approximately 0.2 mile from service center) on Saturday 10/22 10AM-12PM. Hemlock Gorge Reservation is a beautiful community park situated along the Charles River bank. Materials and tools will be supplied for all volunteers. Refreshments are also provided after the clean up. Please dress appropriately for the work and the weather (rain or shine). Interested volunteers please report to Service Center by 9:30 AM.

• To celebrate the centennial of the Republic of China, the New England Association of Chinese School (NEACS) will sponsor competition events in Chinese Culture and Arts on November 5, Saturday from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Chinese Culture Center in Newton. Please check the attachment for details. If you are interested in participating in the competition, please contact our school staff.

This year, we will still give away uniforms to new students or returning students who did not receive a uniform last year. Please ask for one from Jennifer Ying. • Adult Yoga class and adult Chinese Class are cancelled on 10/16 due to schedule conflict. The Chinese class is free while the Yoga class is $5 per visit.
• Due to scheduled events at JGM, we will have no access to the cafeteria and gym on 12/18/11 while have to vacate from the cafeteria by 11:45 PM on 1/22/12. We still have access to all the regular classrooms. We apology for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.
Master Cheng Yen’s Teaching and Jing-Si Aphorisms:
• Recognizing the importance of moral and ethical values to the family can return the society to stability and harmony.
• Performing good deeds is not only the purpose but also the obligation of our life.
• The success can only be achieved after we make firm determination.
• Ability to endure insults is the real strength.
• More people with a sincere heart and true love are needed to protect the Earth from the abuse and pollution so that the nature and all living organisms can recover.
• Whoever apply their strength wisely does not rush; embrace their resolve firmly does not dither; with ample determination and patience, the success will be within reach.
• Keep your mind in peace then your surrounding will become auspicious.
• Educators should remind themselves that they are also teaching humanity and compassion instead of just knowledge.
