Tzu Chi Fundraising Campaign for Haiti
“$10 to feed a family of 5 and $30 to shelter a family”
A month after the devastating earthquake impacted Haiti, Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (“Tzu Chi”) continues its service while many charity organizations are departing from the disaster zone. Seven teams of Tzu Chi disaster response and medical volunteers were deployed in rotation. A mid to long term disaster recovery plan is in progress to provide housing settlement for the displaced families. Hence, Tzu Chi initiates fundraising campaign – “$10 to feed a family of 5 and $30 to shelter a family” to help Haitian meet their challenges for survival.
Medical mission, relief aid distribution, cash for work, and food for work programs are going on simultaneously. As of February 11, 2010, summary of relief aid distributed were as following: 8 tons of instant rice, 2.8 tons of rice, 22.3 tons of corn meal, 17 tons of beans, 52 Kg of flour, 6500 reusable bowls, 4400 spoons, and 3400 buckets and lids. 2944 families (or 12,679 people) were benefited. For medical mission, 1604 patients were treated in free clinic.
Due to the coming rainy season, Tzu Chi has collected and delivered 1,000 tents and 29,030 tarps on February 18, 2010 to provide shelters from the weather.
Local residents have repeatedly indicated the most urgent needs are food, shelter, medical service/hygiene, and returning to their lives prior to the earthquake. Tzu Chi food for work program will step up its coverage to provide hot meals as payment for employment. Local residents were hired to clean debris out of their own homes and neighborhood.
Mr. William Keh, Chief Executive Officer, led the meeting with Haitian Prime Minister, Mr. Jean-nay Bellerive, to provide 500 mobile toilets for sanitation and prevention of disease outbreak. Permanent housing settlement and more temporary public toilets are in planning with support from the government. Please support Tzu Chi relief operation in Haiti to help more displaced and hungry families to survive.
